Since I posted the differing Boyne mountain uphill policies, ease note I said also that SR should have a different policy given the differing layouts of the resorts. I think a lot of the current issues (maybe not so much issues, but visibility of the uphill traffic) is due to the limited terrain we currently have. That all said, all it will take is one DH/Uphill collision to cause the resort to relook at this. Being that uphilling is not their exact business model, I have a feeling I know which segment would see new restrictions. I hope it never comes to this. Personally, I usually only uphill on wind hold days. Primarily because I like to spend time with my dog, we usually go out at day break and put in an hour or two of hiking prior to skiing. MB, saw you Monday as we hiked up RR and across Barker Basin and SouthRidge to Ridge Run/Ski Back. One of these days I'll join you for a pre lift uphill. Maybe holiday week.I dont believe it....

If you want to compare Boyne policies, it's worth noting that this is the first time in quite a while that Big Sky allows any uphill travel, and it's a very limited route and time window for ascent and descent.
FWIW, I've been uphill on my own power twice this year, and I've been asked for a pass once. I'd call that a pretty good rate of checking.

This past weekend I was skiing Ecstasy on skier’s right, came around a bend and there was someone skinning up skier’s left. Thank goodness I wasn’t on the left, which is actually the side I usually hug. Gave me a good scare even though I was opposite them as I wasn’t expecting someone coming up there. Checked the uphill policy and it explicitly states that skinning isn’t allowed on Ecstasy..
I’m fine with people skinning, I do during windhold days myself. Seems like there is a lot more uphill traffic and it’s a little all over the place without standardization. For example, which side of a trail should people be going up? A bunch of times on Lazy River there has been a group split on both sides of the trail, seemed odd.

I feel it is OK to pull over and remind that person that skinning is NOT allowed on Ectasy and that person will ruin it for the rest of us. I do not believe there is a policy on which side of the trail you need to be on....it really depends...for example you shouldn't really go up lookers left on Risky as the grooming line does not go all the way to the side of the trail thus placing you in the middle of the trail...so stay lookers right is the thing to do.

Skinning ecstasy is against the rules I would love a few “this is were you should skin” marks on the map if they remain steadfast at only :30 pre-lift Interesting that one Boyne resort in Maine allows it only pre-lift hours and the other is essentially only allowing it during lift hours.

Looks like Sugarloaf’s policy about uphill during pre-lift only (7-8:30) is temporary until more terrain opens.

Uphill growing at every mtn I've skied in the past few years - especially west. Seriously long skins from Steamboat base to tram top - kudos to those efforts.
Ima (skier's) left side downhiller and on the right side going up (usually). Unless the skis are running, I take a path 2-3 ski lengths wide from the trail edge on the way down and hug the limbs going up. If I can't see everything in front of me, I assume there's somebody on the other side. So always a speed check and quick look before dropping over a rise. Knowing that, I can usually touch the trees with my pole in those areas on the way up. Deathwish to downhill that close on the way down unless speed is "stoppable". Uphill on Shockwave, Obsession, RightStuff, Rogue, and Excal are the most challenging for being hidden below "giant steps". So far no close calls either way with that strategy ... KOW.

Simply put, the downhill skier has to be aware of everything below him, including skinners, skiers who are stopped, machinery, pot holes, etc...just because someone is going uphill doesnt change the rules. Uphill skier has to be in control....

Same experience, Sunday afternoon of Thanksgiving weekend, last run at 3:45, plan was down Ecstasy to Monday Morning; a third of the way down Ecstasy someone dead center of the trail skinning up, not what I expected a 3:45. Two things should have happened: 1.) I should have avoided the downhill skier per the code 2.) I should have politely told them skinning is not allowed on Ecstasy (like reminding folks to wear a mask at the dump). Instead.... I avoided the downhill skinner (or is it uphill?), continued on with no interaction, and pondered the dirty look I got for no doubt interfering with someone's ZEN moment.

Yes and no. In this instance, yes it is against the rules on Ecstacy. Of course, if Barker and Locke are on windhold then Ecstacy is game on for skinning (same is true for Kansas, no-no except for when Oz/Jordan on windhold). Zenny is right Sugarloaf will allow uphill during lift hours once they get more terrain open (obviously skinning up Burnt is not limited but I think it pretty much unskin/skiable at the moment). That said, Sugarloaf has designated lift hours skin tracks up different parts of the mountain that you must stay on uphill, its not the free for all SR is with limited exceptions. I agree, they should post the prohibited uphill trails at their uphill start points since there are only a couple (and for good reason given the traffic those trails usually have). Is Escapade included in the no-no list?

No sense in seeing all the snow on Abram get wasted before the rain so "up hilled" a couple of trail up over moguls. They have a decent base hope it sticks around.

You need to get out more often....

Yesterday and today, encountered people skinning up skier’s left of Ecstasy again.. 2 people side by side this morning, so worse with sticking more into the trail. Today I was in a position to stop, so I did and let them know that uphill travel wasn’t allowed on that particular trail. They didn’t seemed concerned in the least haha. I just left it with, “read the uphill policy and watch out for the blind corners you’re approaching with people not expecting you to be there climbing up at them”.
