Head over to Mount Abram before they open instead of The River

Agreed, key point being "several"....it cant just be one route. I have shared my vision with ski patrol for 4-6 route to tops of Locke, Barker, Spruce and NP that can be very safe for all......I saw 3 near collisions today. Man, that kid in the great jacket...who brought him to ski at SR? And the few routes that are no-no's during the day (unless lifts are on windhold) some can't seem to avoid going uphill on. Today, on Lights Out one turkey going uphill at like 1:15pm and he was looking like everyone skiing down was in the wrong. Nutcase. Sorry guy on lights out is on legal route. Downhill skies code to be followed. Uphill policy exists both have to follow rules. And why would I go to Mt A to go uphill? I see zero reason to ever have to do that. Plus they barely have snow. Am I missing something? Garcia, shouldn’t be an issue if for you if you show up at 1 pm right? 😊

And your getting it done in the early morning - check. And even if your running late, your still nearly near the top. How about just saying you cant start up after a certain time... and those that are already on their way up are cool. It seems like every few years this gets recycled and the effort is wasted against the group that is the most respectful of the Mt, the Mt Op's and Patrol. This season, this is an issue everywhere, not just SR.

Granted its early season but once there is a safe base there are plenty of skiable places around here. Mt Abram during the season is not open every day so hiking up to powder is normally the reason to hike up a mountain in the winter Skinners would have the place to themselves, not sure why you think Abram has nothing to offer. When I lived out west and hiked it was up mountains that didn't have lifts, we've had this discussion before I commend folks effort to it just think it would be less dangerous and a cooler experience coming up Yeti Ville or Tango instead of a groomer. Its is getting crowded out there and the way the snowmakers have been making these insane mounds with ice backs its frickin dangerous out there on the trails.

Think you are missing the point, there is no snow yet...especially at Mt A. Many skin all almost every day regardless of fresh snow and when there is powder we find it. I think you might be missing the fitness / work out / being out early to see sunrise part of the activity. It’s not just for powder days. Right now groomers is what we have. Beats the shit out of standing in lift lines. AndI think the are far more people going downhill that create a lot more danger than the people going up hill. Half of ski patrol is out there really early and many mt employees. Most would never see what is happening at 630700 am on weekends. To each his own.

Hiking early is a completely different thing, makes sense and is awesome. Middle of the day on a busy trail not so much. Maybe going up the mountain bike trails would be an option. Just saying each year it get more popular there needs to be strictly up hill trails

Still, with Lights Out the only egress route currently from Jordan and Aurora, stupid to be uphilling it midday. Plenty of other less crowded routes to uphill midday right now. And don't look at the downhiller's like they are in your way. That IS the point of ski resort skiing and riding, going downhill.

I think it was Saturday AM around 9:00, group of 5-6 uphillers standing in the intersection of Thataway and Exit Right, not a good spot for those buzzing over from Escapade to Spruce. They already looked tired, winded, sweaty....didn't look like a lot of fun from the lift running overhead. I don't get it, but I'm an out of shape middle aged guy. I'll skin if there are wind holds, but makes no sense to me if the lift is running. Another bad spot is skiers left of Road Runner. You come over the bridges, sometimes to the far side having to pass someone and hello someone is in your direct path skinning up at you.

Wasn't us ...Just wondering you question people who run or ride a bike..I mean cars/busses are available right? How about hike? How about any other form of exercise, do you look for the easiest way out? Take escalator vs stairs at the mall? Its a great workout, gets you to places you don't go on skis, gets you out w friends...you should try it, I bet you would like it...but warning you will get sweaty . But I agree, we all need to be aware of and follow the skiers codes and uphill policy, it is clear on how to be safe. Added and not to defend the group you saw on Saturday, but I observe skiers stopped in those same spots all the time, so not sure what the difference is. Another way of handling is to politely and respectfully inform those going up/down of their responsibilities if you notice people doing things incorrectly. To each his own.

Not questioning runners or cyclist but cycling is great example, do you run red lights and fail to signal turns? Ride against traffic? I believe there is a right time and right place for things, and a right way to do things. If every Tom, Dick and Harry is going to skin on limited terrain when the lifts are running, then they should show etiquette and/or Mountain Ops should put in dedicated routes. You'll all be when they eliminate it all together. Can you tell me how many great places those uphillers got to on Saturday? Did they get to use the restroom at North Peak? Politely reminding someone of their uphill responsibilities is like asking someone to put a mask on at the dump right?

I think its great for SR to allow Uphill access right now. That said, it should be noted that both of the other 2 Boyne New England resorts are currently prohibiting Uphill all together (Loon) and severely limiting it to just 0700-0830 (Sugarloaf). Loon's case, they only allow it on certain routes (I believe the lower mountain route is Lower Picked Rock which normally would have been one of the first runs open. This year they skipped it, focusing more runs into Gov. Adams base side due to the limited capacity out of Octagon this year) and they are not yet open. In Sugarloaf's case, they welcome the early risers, given the longer climb to the top vs SR is why they open it earlier, but they acknowledge the limited terrain currently makes it a hazard to allow uphill during lift hours. I believe Sugarloaf also has dedicated lift hour uphill routes as well to minimize issues.
Granted, SR's layout is vastly different than both Loon (3 actual "peaks") and Sugarloaf (2 actual "peaks) which would necessitate a more open policy at SR to allow skinning up then skiing down across the entire resort. When most snowmaking terrain is open, probably not a factor. But this season with limited terrain open, a seemingly much larger uphilling contingent on hill during lift hours, kind of makes one wonder if the resort has taken notice as well. Can both groups be safe? Yes, but it will only take one accident on hill for the winds of policy to shift unfortunately.

SR's Uphill community is very unique. You do not see as many people going uphill at a ski area during operational hours as you do at Sunday river. I do not have a problem it this at all. It's kind of cool. I am not sure I would do this myself at a resort while it is open but more power to those that do. At Sugarbush, there is also a huge uphill community but most people would not go up hill at the resort because there are so many other options within 20 minutes where you can be by yourself. Also the ski area does not permit uphill travel during operating hours because of past issues. I am lucky because I can go out of my door, skin in the woods on a path all the way to the top of North linx and either drop inbounds or drop out into slidebrook or adjacent woods areas that are very rarely tracked. All that matters is that you enjoy what you are doing and do not endanger others.
Skinning at the edge of a trail should not be a big deal for anyone so have at it.

Politely reminding someone of their uphill responsibilities is like asking someone to put a mask on at the dump right? Downhill travelers have responsibility as well, which too many people don’t seem to understand or care about...not saying you specifically but I see and hear about it all the time, and I’ve too many close calls almost been taken out from behind when tethering a Maine Adaptive skier (on beginner/learning terrain, mostly by people who are coming down from the upper mtn and think it is some kind of race to the bottom) to want think about. Bottom line is everyone should know the responsibility code and be in control and ready/able to avoid unexpected objects, etc.
